Episode Synopsis

It is Halloween night in Los Angeles and Patrick is still recovery from the near fatal battle with his evil duplicate. After a quick check on Patrick, Ethan goes to the South LA Clinic to work the night shift. Jalen takes advantage of the costumed revelers walking the streets to patrol in the open with no one questioning his ninja "costume". Lauren meanwhile is attending an office costume party dressed as Morticia Addams and Dana, as usual, is spending the night in the special collections section of the UCLA library.

Later that night Lauren's partying is interrupted by an overwhelming vision showing the entire city of Los Angeles in panic and chaos. At almost the same time Ethan notices a strange light outside that no one else seems to see. When he goes out on the street to investigate he sees a massive, glowing rip in the sky through which hundreds, maybe thousands of spirits seem to be spilling into LA, and he is the only one who notices. It is not long before other effects do become apparent, though, as Jalen follows screams of panic in time to see dozens of zombies emerging from their graves in a cemetery.

All three call up Dana, who up to this point was unaware anything was happening. Juggling her call waiting she manages to get the message that something is up and the group agrees to meet up at the clinic. En route Dana begins to see spectral manifestations like poltergeist activity and ghostly visions all around her.

At the clinic Ethan describes what he is seeing and Dana realizes that the barrier between the realms of the living and the dead, which is generally at its weakest around Halloween, has somehow been ripped open allowing the spirits of the dead to return. Those spirits whose corpses are buried in Los Angeles are reinhabiting their bodies and rising as zombies while the rest of the spirits are haunting places, people, and even objects like cars all across the city.

The cause of the rip is a mystery, but Jalen points out that the zombies may be the more immediate threat and that their friend Reverend Morris' church is near the clinic and that it has an old cemetery. Ethan is unable to get away from work because of the influx of injuries from the chaos so the other three head to the church. There they see that zombies are rising in the cemetery and that at least one nasty spirit is haunting the church. Jalen fights past the zombies while Dana and Lauren head inside to help Reverend Morris. Dana lays salt across the doorway, a traditional way to keep the zombies out and helps the Reverend with a religious ritual to banish the haunting spirit.

Still unsure of why or how the barrier between dimensions was torn open, Dana decides they should head to the likely scene of the greatest disturbance, the oldest and largest cemetery in the city. Lauren volunteers to stay with the Reverend and help get people into the safety of the church while Dana and Jalen head towards downtown LA after convincing Ethan to join them.

As the trio approach the downtown cemetery they see something large manifesting there. When they get closer they realize it is a giant creature made up a dozens, maybe hundreds, of zombies joined together. Dana recognizes it as an alchemical construct called a Leviathan, but these are normally created using voluntary living subjects, and are not usually that big. They spot a robed individual standing by a large bonfire at the center of the disturbance and realize the events of the evening were caused deliberately.

Dana calls in Lauren and the Reverend to help prevent more zombies from joining into the Leviathan while she tries to figure out how to stop things. The group recognizes the robed figure as the demon necromancer Maalik and Jalen goes in to attack him. After a quick survey of the area Dana realizes there are three separate spells at work: one to open the barrier to the spirit world, one to summon and control the zombies, and one to form the Leviathan. Since at this point closing the rift would be akin to fixing the barn door after the horses have escaped Dana concentrates on stopping the zombie control spell, which will in turn make it easier to destroy the Leviathan (which requires willing participants).

Ethan, meanwhile, realizes that even if the barrier is repaired the spirits will still be loose in Los Angeles. It will be impossible to track down the millions of spirits individually and lay them to rest so the only solution is to send them back before Dana manages to repair the barrier. With the others busy Ethan sees that his abilities make him the only one that can do this, despite the enormous risk. Needing a large open area, preferably with a sound system, Ethan takes the Reverend's car and heads a few blocks north of the cemetery, to Dodger Stadium.

Jalen is able to hold Maalik at bay and Dana stops the zombie control spell. At that point the zombies begin to realize what has happened to them. Some are panicked while others are enraged. A quick thinking Jalen directs the maddened undead at Maalik who is swiftly buried under a mob of attacking zombies. As Dana begins to undo the Leviathan spell the others notice that Ethan has disappeared with the Reverend's car.

At the stadium Ethan has drawn a magic circle on the playing field and begins the ritual to call the spirits to him. Slowly at first, then at a quicker rate, more and more ghost begin to appear in the stadium until they fill the structure. Fighting down the terror Ethan begins the second part of the ritual to send the spirits back through the rift. Meanwhile Dana has caused the Leviathan to break down into its component zombies and a short time later all the zombies just collapse in place. Unknown to the group this is because Ethan has called all the wayward spirits to him.

As Dana begins the counter spell that will seal up the barrier between the realms Ethan is completing his ritual. The millions of spirits begin flying up back to rift, many of them passing by or through Ethan. The ghostly energy spirals around him, lifting Ethan up and spinning him around in a vortex of psychokinetic energy. Finally Dana's spell closes the rift and Ethan falls to the ground, his ritual a success. Some spirits still remain, but most have been sent back.

Back at the cemetery Jalen digs through the pile of zombies looking for Maalik. He can only find the demon's head and, after snapping a digital photo of it to show Patrick, throws the head on the bonfire. The group waits around for a few minutes to see if Ethan will return with the Reverend's car, but when he does not they leave before the authorities show up.

At the Blue Plate Diner for the traditional post-apocalypse celebration the group wonders what has happened to Ethan. And back at Dodger Stadium, Ethan still lies where he fell, wrapped in a fetal position unable to bring himself to move. And part-kneeling, part-hovering next to him is the ghost of his dead fiancé.
