Los Angeles, 8 months earlier... Lauren Sheppard and her friends are
shopping at an outdoor mall when Lauren suddenly drops, clutching her head. She
screams and windows all along the mall shatter.
Present day... New Hope Psychiatric Hospital. A psychiatrist, Dr.
Abrams, is showing other doctors around the facility. He stops outside a padded cell,
commenting about an unusual case. Inside the cell is Lauren, sedated and in a
straightjacket. She spasms as a vision hits her, she sees a young couple in a car
being attacked by vampires.
The scene shifts to the couple Lauren saw in her vision, the vampires
attack, but themselves come under attack by ex-LAPD officer Patrick Bright. The
vampires run and Patrick pursues them, finally cornering them in an alley and dusting
them. Unnoticed by Patrick, the fight was observed from a nearby rooftop by Shadow
Clan ninja assassins.
At an inner city clinic in Los Angeles a teenager comes running in
with his friend, who appears to be dying of a drug overdose. One of the medics on
staff, Ethan Marsh, is unable to save the boy. Later, waiting for the coroner to
arrive, Ethan starts talking to the corpse as if he expects the boy to wake up any
minute.
Meanwhile, in the new downtown LA office tower belonging to Wolfram
& Hart, a young lawyer named Simmons is speaking to the Shadow Clan ninjas seen
earlier. Simmons sends the assassins off to the psychiatric facility where Lauren is
being held. They all get in a black, unmarked van and head to the facility. En route,
the van is spotted by Patrick, whose supernatural senses warn him about something in
the vehicle. Patrick shadows the van as it makes its way to the facility.
In her apartment, grad student Dana Kincaid is looking over newspaper
reports about dead teenagers. Wondering if something supernatural is involved,
she heads to the area where the majority of the disappearances were taking place.
Back at the clinic, Ethan is still watching the teenager's corpse
when he notices a strange glowing line leaving the corpse. No one else seems to see
it, so Ethan leaves the clinic to follow the line. As he makes his way through the
streets he sees several more of the lines, all of which seem to be heading in the
same direction. Focused solely on following the strings, Ethan does not notice that
he has been spotted by Dana, who starts to follow him.
At the facility, Patrick follows the assassins in. He begins taking
them out until there are two left. As the two approach Lauren's cell, the lead
ninja spots Patrick and sends the other, Jalen Shan Vinh, to deal with him. As
Patrick and Jalen battle, the lead ninja enters Lauren's cell. Seeing the
approaching figure Lauren's telekinesis kicks in instinctively and she sends him
flying out of the cell into the far wall. The assassin pulls himself out of the wall
and begins transforming into a large creature.
The sight of the transformed ninja stops both Jalen and Patrick in
their tracks. Jalen, faced with the suddenly revealed inhuman nature of his teammate
contrasted with the selfless heroism he saw in Patrick while observing the fight
with the vampires, switches sides and helps Patrick slay the demonic ninja. With
the demon dead, they free Lauren and leave in Patrick's car.
Meanwhile, Dana confronts Ethan and realizes they are both on the
same trail, which is taking them to a rave in a warehouse. As Ethan looks at the
warehouse and his second sight kicks in, revealing a dark tower. In Patrick's car,
Lauren has another vision in which she sees Ethan and Dana under attack by
a demonic creature.
