The episode opens with a flashback to Patrick's wedding to his wife
Sarah. Acting as best man is Patrick's then partner and best friend Andrew Cross. As
the happy couple finish their vows the scene shifts to present day where the two are
in court for the start of their divorce proceedings. Representing Sarah are lawyers
from Wolfram & Hart. Meanwhile Dana has been investigating Leland Richter and Kronos
Industries and discovers that the company has been sponsoring several archaeological
digs in the Middle East.
Another flashback shows Patrick being questioned by Internal Affairs
back when he was still with the LAPD. As Patrick describes what happened the scene
shifts to the incident in question. While on patrol Patrick and his then-partner
Andrew Cross come across a gang of teenagers accosting some young girls in the park.
They split up to pursue the teens and when Patrick rejoins Andrew he arrives just in
time to see his partner firing his pistol at one of the teens, who is prone on the
ground and apparently unarmed. Cross swore that the dead boy was attacking the girls,
but there was no evidence the girls had even been touched. Despite the fact that the
teen's body had vanished, there was enough circumstantial evidence to ruin Cross'
career with the LAPD.
In the present, Lauren is at work when she receives a vision showing
a man she recognizes as Rev. Desmond Morris being attacked by what look like zombies.
Lauren contacts Jalen and Dana and the three go to the Reverend's church to see what
they can do. They are unable to contact Patrick as he is still in court at the time.
At the church they learn that someone has been harassing the Reverend lately. Whoever
it is has been using scare tactics, nailing dead cats to the church door, painting
Satanic messages in blood, even filling the Reverend's car with pornography and hate
literature. As night falls the church is surrounded by a gang of undead teenagers
speaking a strange language who begin attacking the rest of the group, but they only
taunt the Reverend for some reason.
The scene shifts to less than a year earlier where Patrick and his
new partner, Frank Brigham, are called to a disturbance at a nightclub. While their
backup guards the entrances, Patrick and Frank enter the nightclub. The club is
under siege by a gang of vampires who quickly subdue Frank. His gun useless, Patrick
is about to be killed when he suddenly finds himself filled with power. It is at this
moment that the Powers That Be have chosen him as their new Champion. With his
newfound superhuman strength, speed, and skill Patrick dispatches the vampires almost
by instinct. The last of the vampires is dusted by Patrick as the other police
arrive. With only a demolished club and no bodies, Patrick is unable to give a
reasonable explanation of what happens.
At the church the undead teens, known as Netherpunks, continue their
assault. Patrick arrives, having gotten Lauren's message, and joins the attack. He is
shocked to recognize one of the Netherpunks as the teenager he saw Cross gun down in
the park years earlier. Though the group holds their own for a while, the Netherpunks
start to gain the upper hand and Dana is injured. When Dana notices that the
Netherpunks have still not attacked the Reverend directly. She realizes that they in
fact cannot attack him due to his pure faith and this is why they have been
harassing him, to corrupt him sufficiently that they can get to him. With the
Reverend taking the lead, the group is able to turn the tide of the fight and drive
off the Netherpunks.
In a final flashback, we see Patrick and Sarah arguing. Since the
incident at the nightclub Patrick's behavior has grown more erratic, to the point
where he has been let go from his job with the LAPD. A frustrated Sarah has finally
had enough and leaves Patrick, taking their infant daughter with her.
In the aftermath of the fight with the Netherpunks the group takes
the injured Dana to the clinic where Ethan works, which is near to the church. When
they get there they find out that Ethan is not there, and has not been at work for a
couple days. Realizing that none of them have seen him for a few days either the
group wonders what has happened to their friend.
