The episode opens with a sequence of flashbacks showing Travis McCauley's various
encounters with the group. Realizing this lawyer is somehow connected to all of them, the group
decides to investigate the law firm he works for, Wolfram & Hart.
Jalen decides to go and ask the Oracle what he knows about W & H. On the way
there, Jalen is shocked to realize that he is not casting a shadow! He puts his concern aside when
he arrives at the Oracle's. It turns out the Oracle knows a great deal about Wolfram & Hart,
and none of it is good. The Oracle tells Jalen that the Senior Partners of W & H are a trio of
ancient and powerful demons called the Wolf, the Ram, and the Hart. The Oracle also warned Jalen
that if Wolfram & Hart are aware of the group then he and his friends need to be on guard.
Leaving the Oracle's place, Jalen notices that he is now casting three distinct shadows.
Meanwhile, the others have taken other roads of investigation. Patrick checks in
with his ex-partner to see what the LAPD can tell him, namely that W & H generally serve high
power clients and have a habit of winning cases where witnesses vanish mysteriously. Ethan does a
more conventional search using the Internet but can only come up with the public face of the firm.
He instead turns his attention to other tasks, namely finding a new apartment for himself.
While Dana goes to get her notes before the others return with their results, Lauren
goes out to get food for everyone. While out she sees someone she thinks is Jalen, only wearing a
suit. Before she can approach the person he gets into a black BMW and drives away.
Jalen is the first to return to apartment. While waiting for the others, he notices
that the shadows in the apartment seem to follow him around the room. He fears an attack by Shadow
Clan ninjas, but when the others start to arrive the shadows return to normal. Jalen, Patrick, and
Dana all compare notes on what they have learned.
While heading back to his apartment, Ethan witnesses a traffic accident. He rushes
in to help and is assisted by a lovely young woman named Tina. After the paramedics arrive, Ethan
takes Tina to the diner to get her some coffee. He learns that she was on her way to a job interview,
but now she is late and her clothes are covered in blood. Ethan gets Lauren to bring over some spare
clothes. A grateful Tina leaves Ethan her name and phone number.
That night Patrick joins his ex-partner Frank and some other former colleagues for
a poker game. After the game finishes Patrick and Ethan begin walking home. While passing by a
strip mall, the mannequins in the store windows animate and come after the two of them. Patrick is
able to fight a path through the attacking mannequins so the two of them can escape, but the encounter
leaves Frank very disturbed as he slowly begins to realize the kind of life his ex-partner now
leads.
Later in the night Dana has fallen asleep at her desk while doing research, leaving
her books scattered on the table, including the Book of Zar-n'Atoth. Above the city, several stars
in the sky begin to shift position and down below the design on the Book's cover changes shape...
